The Point Jerningham Saluting Battery

A booming, unforgettable experience unique to our kura.

A peaceful waterfront view showing a calm body of water with hills in the background, a small dock with a buoy in the water, and a grassy area with trees, buildings, a concrete patio, and benches in the foreground.

A Front-Row Seat to History

Nestled on the hillside above Point Jerningham, Roseneath School shares its neighbourhood with a very special piece of New Zealand’s ceremonial history: Wellington's official Saluting Battery.

Because we are situated right above the battery, our ākonga (students) enjoy an incredible, front-row seat to major national events that most children only ever get to see on the evening news.

Earmuffs On!

For our tamariki, a royal birthday or a major state occasion means one very exciting thing. When an official 21-gun salute is scheduled for events like the King's Birthday, our teachers break out the earmuffs and the whole kura heads outside.

Watching the New Zealand Defence Force fire the ceremonial cannons out across Te Whanganui a Tara (Wellington Harbour) is a thrilling, ground-shaking experience!

Living Civics and History

This unique proximity turns national events into a living, booming history lesson right on our doorstep. It sparks fantastic classroom conversations about civics, history, and our role in the wider Wellington community. It is just one of the many wonderful quirks of our spectacular geographic location, and a memory our students carry with them long after they leave Roseneath.

Experience the Roseneath Difference

While we can't promise the cannons will be firing on the day you visit, we would love to show you the spectacular views and unique environment our tamariki get to enjoy every day.
